By Timothy Goodman and Jessica Walsh. One day in December of , frustrated and disappointed with our love lives, we came up with the idea for an experiment. We had been good friends and peers in the graphic design world for years, and we were constantly surprised by how consistent our opposite relationship problems were. Based on the adage that it takes forty days to change a bad habit, we decided that dating each other for forty days, even though our relationship had always been platonic, would force us to explore our issues and maybe even break our own bad love habits. We thought that if we could carry this out with as much sincerity as possible, then maybe we could not only help ourselves, but potentially create a larger dialogue to help the many others out there, who, like us, are looking for love. We did not make the decision to create the 40 Days of Dating blog until after our experiment.

Today marks the last day of the “40 Days of Dating” experiment, a forced courtship blog run by two successful, telegenic graphic designer friends who decided to very publicly try dating each other. Timothy Goodman is the man-child commitment-phobe; Jessica Walsh is the hopeless romantic. Mine: because they’re both insufferable. Eh, I feel bad calling Jessica insufferable; she’s just not my type of gal.
She enjoys running around the city pretending to be Amelie and comes up with analogies like, “Our relationship with Disney World, like each other, was deeply conflicted and complicated. We are so wrong for each other in so many ways, and so right for each other in many other ways. But Tim! Tim is such a dick to her. He writes endlessly about how neurotic and complicated Jessica is without realizing that he’s the hopelessly messed-up one. For example, on Day 34 — that’s like a year of intimacy in real dating time — Jessica mentions to him that a girl he briefly dated might be at a party they’re attending.
Tim irrationally freaks out and goes into this rant about how Jessica is a devious manic pixie “tricky girl”:. The tricky girl will unknowingly rip your heart out, cut it into little pieces, and then ask you, politely, if she can feed you. Everything that happened tonight was a classic tricky girl situation.

Over-Intellectualizing 40 Days of Dating Couple Breaks Up Due to Impossible Exposure “What does it mean to love someone? two decided to break up — a predictable end to a relationship that began unconventionally.
Over in New York, two close friends had decided to stage an experiment, dating for 40 consecutive days, and writing about the experience. Eighteen months later, and the pair are back, with a book about their experiment, and the aftermath. Now, I have to admit, two summers ago, I tried to get into 40 Days. I remember reading the first couple of days of the experiment, but struggling to get into it. I attributed it to dating overkill.
I was knee-deep in my own dating experiment. And so, when I saw the hype surrounding the new book, I decided to give the project another go. However, this time I was able to pinpoint some of the reasons why 40 Dates of Dating is lost on me. Even in the opening pages, I found myself quickly disliking Jessie and her take on life.
This only amplified as she continues on through the book, becoming more and more preachy about her lifestyle and everything-free hipster eating habits. I have friends from all backgrounds, and with all kinds of attitudes to life, and yet I found it hard to relate to Jessie in any way. By contrast, Timothy seemed more likeable, though he still became rather frustrating as the pages went on, mainly as a result of his increasing obsession with Jessie.
40 Days of Dating: An Experiment
Their solution to the question? Date each other for forty days. Both Jessica and Timothy have self-professed relationship issues—him with commitment issues and her with over-commitment issues—and both have found themselves single. The plan is to jump into a full-scale committed relationship, go to couples therapy, and complete a survey at the end of each of the forty days.
To me, however, it seemed like 40 Days of Dating was less like an experiment and more like a train wreck where nobody could look away. But everyone learns from mistakes—even when they seem to be made intentionally.
“In the past, I’ve always been so focused on ‘What am I doing and what is the end result?’ [40 Days] set me so far over the edge stress-wise by.
The beautifully constructed website—which went live in mid-July—chronicles the experiment of two long-time friends fed up with the New York City dating scene who begin a relationship told through a series of daily blog posts. If virtually every recent article written about modern relationships is to be believed, casual hookups are rapidly replacing more familiar dating practices. That is not the case here. Instead, Walsh and Goodman jumped headlong into a fully formed relationship, complete with weekly couples therapy sessions.
The website has received so much attention over the summer that Walsh and Goodman signed with talent agency CAA. And the detail with which Walsh and Goodman chronicle each day they spend together through responses to a series of daily questions is unparalleled. The actual arc of their relationship, however, is nothing experimental. Reading the blog entries reveals far greater nuance, but the problems they face are not particularly original.
